Here’s a headline that might surprise you. The Forbes 400 list just came out. America’s 400 richest people actually underperformed the S&P 500 over the past year. These are people with access to the best advisors money can buy. Yet the simple index still won.
At first glance, this seems alarming. If the wealthiest, most well-advised people in the country can’t beat a basic market index, what hope does the rest of us have? However, this story misses some important context. We want to break down why this “loss” might actually represent smart investing, and what it means for your own retirement plan.
The Problem With Chasing the S&P 500
We hear this concern often. “Am I beating the market?” It’s a natural question. The S&P 500 is easy to track and constantly discussed in the news. So it makes sense that people use it as their measuring stick.
But here’s the issue. The S&P 500 return is only half the story. It doesn’t tell you how much risk someone took to get that return. Consider this example: would you rather have an 18% return where you might lose 20-30% in a bad year? Or a 16% return where your downside is limited to 10%?
Most people choose the second option once they understand the tradeoff. Yet the scoreboard only shows one number. It never shows the risk you took to get there.
This is exactly what may have happened with the Forbes 400. They might have taken 30% less risk while only trailing the S&P by a few percentage points. On paper, that looks like underperformance. In reality, it could mean a far more durable, sustainable portfolio built to survive decades of retirement, not just one good year.
Why Seven Stocks Matter More Than You Think
Here’s a statistic that should give you pause. Last year, a disproportionate share of the S&P 500’s gains came from just a handful of stocks. The index technically holds 500 companies. However, the majority of its performance was driven by a small group of tech giants, often called the “Magnificent Seven.”
If your portfolio closely tracks the S&P 500, you may be far more concentrated in these few stocks than you realize. That’s a significant risk hiding in plain sight. We compare this to speeding down the highway well above the speed limit while everyone else drives at a safe, steady pace. You might get ahead for a while. But eventually, those flashing blue lights show up in your rearview mirror.
We believe you deserve to know exactly how exposed you are. That’s why we perform stress testing on every portfolio that comes through our office. We run your current holdings through scenarios like 2008, the Great Depression, or even 2022, when both stocks and bonds fell together. This helps you see, before disaster strikes, what your portfolio could look like on the other side of a downturn.
The 4% Rule Isn’t as Simple as It Sounds
For more than 30 years, the 4% withdrawal rule has guided retirement income planning. The idea is simple. Withdraw 4% of your portfolio each year, adjusted for inflation, and your money should last 30 years.
Industry researchers have pointed out a major flaw in this approach. As one analysis put it:
> “If you follow the 4% rule, you would end up your 30-year retirement plan with half as much wealth as you started with, adjusted for inflation. So what that means is that you are not spending as much as you could, and you are leaving so much on the table for your heirs that you’re not able to enjoy the quality of life in retirement that you can truly afford.”
This points to a real problem. Most retirees don’t spend in a straight line. Instead, spending tends to follow what’s often called the “retirement smile.” You spend more in the early years while traveling and enjoying your hobbies. Spending slows down in your mid-70s. Then it increases again later in life due to healthcare costs.
A flat 4% withdrawal doesn’t match this pattern at all. Left without guidance, most people default to the safer, more conservative choice. They underspend out of fear, missing out on experiences they worked a lifetime to afford.
A Better Approach: The Polarity Strategy
So what’s the alternative to generic math from three decades ago? We use a strategy we call polarity. This approach combines sound math with emotional peace of mind, something a one-size-fits-all formula simply can’t offer.
Here’s how it works. You divide your money into two distinct buckets:
Growth bucket: These dollars are invested for maximum long-term growth. They’ll ride the ups and downs of the market.
Safety bucket: These dollars stay liquid, protected from market swings, and ideally keep pace with inflation.
When the market is performing well, you draw income from your growth bucket. When the market turns volatile, you simply shift to your safety bucket instead. You never have to sell growth investments at a loss just to cover expenses.
This strategy does more than protect your portfolio. It actually allows most people to spend more comfortably in retirement, because they’re no longer paralyzed by fear of running out of money. As we often tell clients, when we ask them to label their accounts “G” for growth or “S” for safety, most discover nearly everything they own falls into the growth column. No wonder so many people feel anxious heading into retirement.
