What Old Dominion Can Teach You About Building a Successful Financial Partnership

[updated]

Running a successful band isn’t so different from managing your retirement planning. We discovered this firsthand when we had the opportunity to sit down with the award-winning country group Old Dominion at the CRS Country Radio Seminar in Nashville. Their insights on partnerships, surrounding yourself with good people, and building something that lasts offer valuable lessons for anyone planning their financial future.

The Power of Multiple Stakeholders

When we asked Old Dominion about running a business with multiple personalities and stakeholders, their response was telling. As band member explained, “There’s probably a lot of similarities. I remember, I forget what the decision that we were trying to make was, but we were talking around a table one day, and one of Brad’s friends was with us, and he’s in the corporate world, and he was just kind of shocked at how similar it was, just the decisions that we were making.”

This resonates deeply with our approach. Just like Old Dominion creates music as a team rather than individual solo acts, we believe retirement planning works best as a collaborative effort. We’re not creating an individual advisor plan – we’re creating your personalized retirement strategy through partnership.

Surrounding Yourself with Good People

One of the most important questions we asked the band was about surrounding yourself with good people. Their answer provides a blueprint for financial success: “We tend to retain a lot of people. People do want to work for us so far, and we have great people in charge. So if there’s somebody who doesn’t fit personality-wise, then they kind of know how to make sure that they’re not there anymore.”

The lesson here is profound. Whether you’re building a touring crew or a financial planning team, the people you choose matter enormously. We’ve built our practice around this principle. We carefully select team members who share our values and commitment to client service. More importantly, we help our clients build their own “circle of trust” – the network of financial professionals who will support them throughout retirement.

As Old Dominion noted, “Good people attract good people. So we try to surround ourselves with the best that we know how.” This creates a positive cycle that benefits everyone involved.

Chasing Dreams, Not Just Money

Perhaps the most powerful insight from our conversation was about motivation and longevity. When discussing their staying power in the music industry, Old Dominion shared this wisdom: “There’s a line in a song of ours called No Such Thing as a Broken Heart that says chase after the dream, don’t chase after the money, and that’s what we are doing.”

This philosophy translates directly to retirement planning. We have conversations every week where clients think it’s about the money, but it’s actually about something much deeper. The money is just a tool to help you achieve your dreams and goals. If you’re living solely for financial accumulation without considering what truly matters to you, you might be missing the point.

However, as we jokingly reminded Old Dominion during the interview, “Still put your kids on the 401k. Get your kids set up. Get a solid retirement plan.” The key is balance – pursue your passions while being financially responsible.

The Business of Partnership

Old Dominion’s success comes from understanding that they’re stronger together than apart. As they explained, “It’s hard. So when it comes to songs, like we’re in the middle of the song selection process right now because we’re going in the studio next week. So it really is a team effort to really whittle it down to where we’re all happy with the direction that it’s going.”

This collaborative approach mirrors our philosophy. We don’t make decisions for our clients – we work together to ensure everyone is comfortable with the direction we’re heading. Just like the band creates music that represents the group as a whole, we create financial strategies that reflect your complete financial picture and personal values.

Learning from the Best

Old Dominion told us they modeled their approach after Kenny Chesney, watching how he surrounded himself with amazing people and created an “amazing family” environment. They learned from someone who had already achieved success and adapted those lessons to their own situation.

Similarly, we believe in learning from the best practices in financial planning while adapting them to each client’s unique circumstances. This is why continuing education and staying current with industry developments is so important in our field.
