AI Can Answer Your Questions, But Can It Plan Your Retirement?

Artificial intelligence is everywhere these days. People use it to write emails, plan vacations, and even ask retirement questions. But here’s the real question: should you trust it with your financial future?

We think it’s worth exploring. Even the people building AI technology have concerns. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently said it plainly: “I won’t lie to you. There are real dangers.” He went on to call it a warning sign, one that means we need to slow down and think carefully.

That warning applies directly to retirement planning. So let’s break down what AI can help with, and more importantly, when a human needs to step in.

Where AI Actually Helps

AI is genuinely useful for certain things. In fact, one of its biggest strengths is helping you ask better questions. It’s not necessarily the tool that should answer those questions, but it can point you toward the right ones.

We also use AI ourselves every single day as part of how we monitor markets and inform our analysis. This matters because markets move fast, and humans simply can’t analyze everything happening 24/7 on a massive scale.

A couple of real examples prove this out:

  • When tariffs were launched a few years ago, our analysis quickly identified that small-cap, mid-cap, and large-cap stocks would be affected very differently. That gave us the chance to make thoughtful adjustments instead of just “staying the course.”
  • Earlier this year, when Middle East turmoil raised concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, energy stocks like BP, ConocoPhillips, and Exxon saw significant volatility. Clients who were simply buying and holding missed opportunities. Our tools helped us spot the trend and look for value for our clients during that window.

So yes, AI is a powerful tool for education and analysis. The trouble starts when people let it make decisions for them.

The AI Feedback Loop Problem

We recently had a client experience that perfectly illustrates this risk. After a portfolio review in our office, one of our clients went home and plugged our recommendations into an AI tool to “double-check” our work. We love that kind of engagement. Checking our work and asking tough questions is exactly what you should do.

Here’s where it gets interesting. The AI tool came back with criticism of our recommendations and suggested a different approach instead. So, right there in our office, we took that AI-generated portfolio and ran it through AI again.

The result? The AI started criticizing its own suggestion and pointed back toward something close to our original recommendation. We had gone full circle.

It’s a lot like that old trick of pointing a camera at a television screen. You see the image repeat into infinity, getting smaller each time. That’s what happens when you keep feeding AI’s answers back into itself. You never actually land on a real answer, because that’s not how life works. Life isn’t black and white, and neither is retirement planning.

The real lesson here is simple: AI is only as good as the prompts you give it. Take an AI-generated answer out of context, treat it as gospel, and you could be making a costly misstep as a first step in your retirement plan.

What AI Can’t Do

This is the heart of the matter. AI can crunch numbers. It can help estimate how much you might safely spend each month. What it cannot do is connect with you on an emotional level and uncover the “why” behind your goals.

Here’s an example. Say you tell an AI tool you want to spend $10,000 a month in retirement. It can run that math. But can it ask you why you want to spend that much? Can it dig into the fact that you want to travel, and then ask why travel matters to you? There’s almost always a reason behind the reason, and AI will never get you there.

We see this play out regularly. Clients come in armed with great AI-generated questions. Those questions are a solid starting point. However, they rarely dig deep enough to uncover what truly matters to someone’s values and goals. Without that deeper clarity, people often end up with more questions than answers. That’s paralysis by analysis, and it’s the opposite of what retirement planning should feel like.

AI also can’t manage your portfolio over the next 20 or 30 years while your life changes around it. Economies shift. Elections happen. Life happens. Someone needs to be actively watching your plan and making adjustments. That’s a job for a human advisor, not a chatbot.

Why Local, In-Person Advice Still Matters

We believe strongly in face-to-face relationships, and that’s intentional. We live in Atlanta. We go to Braves games. We sit through the same traffic you do. This is our home, not just our workplace.

That matters more than people realize. We regularly meet new clients who come to us after working with an advisor who has an office nearby but actually works from a home office states away. Suddenly it makes sense why that advisor never answers the phone when they’re needed.

Think about it this way. If you’re shopping for a cheap term life insurance policy, doing it online and hiring someone from another state might be perfectly fine. But if you’re investing a couple million dollars for a retirement that needs to last 20 to 30 years, that’s a different story entirely. You want to shake someone’s hand. You want to know they’re part of your community. You want the option to walk into their office unannounced if you need to.

We have clients who drive an hour or two just to meet with us in person because this decision matters that much to them. They want to see us, know us, and confirm we are who we say we are.

That said, we also recognize convenience matters. Our home office sits on Main Street in downtown Woodstock, with easy parking and plenty of restaurants nearby. We also have a location at Avalon. And if a virtual meeting works better for your schedule, we’re glad to do that too. We understand Atlanta traffic as well as anyone.

Recognized as a Trusted Local Resource

We’re proud to have been named the Best Financial Planner in Woodstock, GA for 2023, 2024, and 2025. This recognition reflects something we take seriously: building real relationships with real people in our community, not just managing numbers on a screen. It’s a reflection of the trust our clients place in us year after year, and we don’t take that lightly. We believe it comes down to showing up, being present, and doing the work to earn that trust every single day.

Let’s Put AI in Its Proper Place, Together

AI is a great tool for education. It is not a replacement for a trusted advisor who knows your full financial picture and your personal goals. If it’s been six months or longer since you’ve had a professional review your investments, your tax situation, or your retirement trajectory, now is a great time to get a second opinion.

That’s exactly why we built our no-cost, three-meeting Retirement Planning Process. It’s designed to answer three key questions: how much risk you should be taking, what your tax situation looks like in retirement, and how you can safely and reliably generate income. No pressure, no obligation, just clarity.
